Dating again after a long marriage

May 27, 2026

How do you start dating again after a divorce or long marriage?

You are not starting over, you are starting from here, knowing things you did not know at twenty-five. Expect grief to surface at inconvenient moments even if you wanted the marriage to end. Go slowly, say what you want plainly, keep your own life, and treat the first few attempts as practice.

You were with someone for fifteen, twenty, thirty years. Now you are not. And everyone is telling you to put yourself out there, which is easy to say and vertigo-inducing to do.

Some honest things nobody says clearly enough.

You are not starting over

You are starting from here, which is different and much better. You know things now that you did not know at twenty-five: what you cannot live with, how you behave under pressure, what you are actually like to be married to.

That last one matters. The most useful preparation is being able to answer honestly: what was I like to live with? Not to assign blame. Because you are taking yourself into the next one.

Grief does not wait its turn

Even if you wanted the marriage to end. Even if it ended years before it formally ended. You are grieving a version of your future, and it arrives at inconvenient moments — in a supermarket, at a wedding, on an otherwise pleasant date.

That is not a sign you are not ready. It is a sign you were properly attached to something, which is the same capacity that will let you attach again.

What genuinely changed

Where people meet. Far more of it now happens online, including in virtual spaces that did not exist when you last dated. That is not only for the young — a great many people in their fifties and sixties are meeting in voice rooms and virtual worlds, where personality arrives before appearance and nobody is judging a photograph. HoneyBear Katherine’s Haven runs live in Meta Horizon Worlds and Clubroom, and the room is not remotely a young person’s room.

The pace of contact. Constant messaging between meetings is now normal. You may find it intense. You are allowed to say so.

The vocabulary. Some of it is useful, much of it is noise. You do not have to learn any of it to be good at this.

What did not change

People still want to be found interesting. Kindness is still rare. Being able to listen properly is still a considerable advantage, and it is one you are likely to be better at now than you were at thirty.

Practical things

  • Do not audition for the marriage you had. You are not filling a vacancy. Different is not worse.
  • Say what you want plainly. After a long marriage many people have lost the habit. Directness is enormously attractive and increasingly rare.
  • Go slowly and do not apologise for it. Anyone rushing you is showing you something.
  • Keep your own life. Do not empty it out to make room for someone hypothetical.
  • Expect the first few to be strange. They are practice. That is allowed.

The part people are embarrassed about

Wanting to be touched again. Wanting to be wanted. Feeling foolish for wanting it at your age.

There is nothing foolish about it. It is one of the most ordinary human wants there is, and the awkwardness fades much faster than you expect once you stop treating it as a confession.

If the marriage left damage

If you are carrying patterns from it — or from further back — green flags nobody talks about is worth reading before you start, because knowing what good looks like matters more than knowing what to avoid.
