Trust and betrayal

Micro-cheating: the small things that erode trust

February 24, 2026

What is micro-cheating?

Micro-cheating is a pattern of small behaviours that each redirect a little intimacy elsewhere: messages timed to avoid notice, deleted conversations that were not incriminating, bringing your best self to one person and your tired self home. No single one ends a relationship. Thirty over six months quietly defunds it.

Micro-cheating describes the behaviours that are not affairs but are not nothing. Individually each is defensible. That is exactly what makes the pattern hard to talk about.

What it tends to look like

  • Messaging someone at times you would not want your partner to see.
  • Keeping a conversation going that has no purpose other than the feeling it gives you.
  • Deleting messages that were not incriminating.
  • Describing your partner to someone as more of a problem than they are.
  • Keeping a person filed under a name that would not raise questions.
  • Bringing your best self to one person and your tired self home.
  • Checking whether one specific person has seen a post.

Read as a list, most people recognise at least one. That is not an accusation. It is the point.

Why it matters more than the size suggests

Each item is a small redirection of intimacy — a little attention, a little disclosure, a little charge, sent somewhere other than the relationship.

Any one of them is trivial. Thirty of them over six months is a relationship being quietly defunded. The partner on the other end usually cannot point to anything, which is the worst part: they feel the absence and have nothing to name, and often start to think the problem is them.

The test that actually works

Forget rules about who you may message. Use this instead:

Would I be comfortable if my partner watched this exact exchange, in full, with no explanation from me?

Not would they be allowed to. Would you be comfortable. Discomfort there is not proof of wrongdoing, but it is a reliable signal that something is being kept.

A second one, quieter and more revealing:

Am I enjoying this because of the conversation, or because of who it is?

What is usually underneath

Micro-cheating is rarely about the other person. It is usually about a feeling that has gone missing at home — being found interesting, being wanted, being new to someone.

That is worth taking seriously rather than shaming. The feeling is legitimate. Sourcing it from a stranger while your partner wonders what changed is the part that causes harm.

If what is missing is desire or attention, the real work is in the relationship you have, which is slower and less flattering than a new audience, and considerably more durable.

If you recognise yourself

Stop, and be honest about which need is being met. Then either bring it home or say it out loud. The version where you keep doing it and hope it stays small is the version that ends badly, because it never stays small.

If you recognise your partner

Lead with the feeling rather than the file of evidence. “I have felt like I’m getting the leftovers lately” opens a conversation. “Who is Dani?” opens a defence.

You are not trying to win. You are trying to find out whether the relationship still has both of you in it.
